Weekly Reading Round-Up

Happy Friday, all!

I’m so in arrears on my reading round-ups that it’s hard to know where to begin!  Thanks to my small people, we’ve had a few rounds of norovirus and a bunch of unspecified sinus infections, so there’s been a lot of comfort reading going on: vintage Elizabeth Peters (the stand alone mysteries), Dame Ngaio Marsh, the original Midsomer Murders books, and others of that ilk.

But I have finally ventured out of the comfort read pile to pick up one or two new books, such as:

Molly Molloy and the Angel of Death, by Maria Vale, in which Death accidentally takes the wrong soul and falls in love.  It’s an absolutely charming book about life, love, finding your person (or, you know, harbinger), and coming to grips with life, death, and the progress of time, in the most upbeat and quirky way.

Murder in the Family, by Cara Hunter, which tells the story through the guise of the filming of a true crime mini-series, revisiting the murder of the producer’s stepfather.  But while he may think he’s in control of the process, it turns out there are a number of surprises in store, and no one is what he or she seems.  This one is for fans of Janice Hallett’s The Appeal.  It’s very much in that same vein.

What have you been reading this week?

I discovered Constance and Gwenyth Little mysteries from the 1930’s and 40s all of which have black in the title except for the first one (The Grey Mist Murders). I have read five so far and love them.

I went into a deep reading funk so to bring myself out of it I dove into the manga series A Bride’s Story, which is about life on the silk road, and it’s just amazing. There are 14 volumes, the last few I haven’t read ever because I got behind so I can’t wait to get to the new to me ones. So far I’m half way through. And I also picked up Hokuloa Road by Elizabeth Hand from the library. I love her ghostly tales so am interested how she merges that with a more straightforward murder mystery on Hawaii! Shades of Magnum PI, always a plus.
