On the Fourth Day of Pink Carnation….

My author gave to me… four Pink Carnation tote bags!

Here’s your question for today: If you could put only four books in your tote bag before being stranded on that proverbial desert island, which four books would they be?

(Note: you are under no obligation to include a Pink Carnation book!)

Four winners will be chosen at random from among the entrants– regardless of book choice.

I’m not sure I can narrow it down to 4 books. First I’m picking between authors. Something by:
    Shannon Hale
    Mary Balogh
    Lisa Kleypas
    Lauren Willig

  5. Jessica on December 15, 2010 at 11:04 am

I’m going to take Susan’s tactic and name four authors:

    Bill Bryson
    Lauren Willig
    Jen Lancaster
    Edward Rutherfurd

(And then I’ll cheat by stapling all their books into one gigantic monograph.

  6. Bridget Erin on December 15, 2010 at 11:12 am

Oh this is too hard. How can you narrow it down to four? I’d have to cheat too!

    1. all the Pink series
    2. the sookie stackhouse books
    3. the harry potter books
    4. a toss up between Philippa Gregory or Jane Austen.

I think I would have to sneak in a kindle!

    2. A Matter of Class by Mary Balogh
    3. Emma by Miss Austen
    4. Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers

That was really difficult, ah…I think if I was restricted to only 4 books, I would probably have them memorized from cover to cover, along with the publishing info and all, haha.

  13. Rachel on December 15, 2010 at 11:39 am

THis is probably the hardest question I’ve ever had to answer … not even exaggerating. And I see that many here feel the same way. Since I have NO WAY to narrow down my library to 4 books, I’ll just name the first 4 books I can think of as faves:

    – Time Traveler’s Wife
    – Redeeming Love
    – The Catcher in the Rye
    – The Mischief of the Mistletoe (Which, might I add, is probably my favorite Pink book. I love that it’s just so light-hearted!)

And if I had a Kindle or Nook or other e-reader, I’d want to count that too … πŸ™‚

I’ve always hated it when credit cards suggest the security question of “what is your favorite book?” since it really depends on my mood, so I can’t really answer the question. This is almost JUST as bad. For today, my 4 favorite books are:

    1. Black Tulip
    2. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
    3. The Temptation of the Night Jasmine (out of all of your characters I relate the most to Charlotte…not to mention Hentrietta and Miles play a prominent role in this book)
    4. The Other Boleyn Girl

I tried to think of books I had read multiple times…

Sooo hard! So many of my favorites are in series! And I feel like it’s cheating to just name a whole series as one book…

    I’ll go with:
    1. The Complete Works of Jane Austen (annotated if possible. Also, muahaha – 6 novels for the price of one!)
    2. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (my favorite of the 7, but I’m sure a complete HP series book is just around the corner…)
    3. The Thirteenth Tale (no explanation necessary. This book is amazing.)
    4. The Secret History of the Pink Carnation (staying true to the beginning, even though a complete series book of these would be great also…)

  35. Caitlin D on December 15, 2010 at 4:05 pm

    1) Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
    2) Anything from the Amelia Peabody Series
    3) Tintin. There must be an anthology out there with a bunch all bundled together. If I got really bored I could make some kind of flipbook animation thing.
    4) Proust. It’s the only way I’d actually finish it otherwise.

This was too difficult, I love my kobo and having all the books.

  36. Samantha on December 15, 2010 at 4:11 pm

    1. Pink series, Emerald Ring if I have to pick.
    2. Emma
    3. Harry Potter series seems like a good idea. I also am really enjoying Stieg Larrson’s series.
    4. Instructional manual on raft construction. Maybe I should cross off Harry Potter and get another book on water purification . . .

  37. michelle on December 15, 2010 at 4:17 pm

    1. Harry Porters (esp. The Half-Blood Prince and Goblet of Fire)
2.Deception of the Emerald Ring ( though I’d sneak all of them in πŸ™‚ )
    3. Crime and Punishment/ Anna Karenina
    4. One of those big complete books of Jane Sustenance Books

Oh, and something big like a dictionary that I wouldn’t mind using for a smoke signal.

  89. Erin G. on December 15, 2010 at 10:28 pm

Oooh! Four is hard but much easier than 1 which is usually the question.

    1. Complete works of Jane Austen (I’ll have time on that island to read the 3 I haven’t yet)
    2. Romancing Mr. Bridgerton (favorite Julia Quinn novel though my preference would be to have her 1st trilogy and the Bridgertons and any other books with Lady Danbury)
    3. Katie Chandler series by Shanna Swendson (these 4 would fit because combined they are still shorter than a Harry Potter book which was the other option)
    4. Full House by Janet Evanovich (though the entire Full Series would be nice)

Pink book that would have to go: Masque of the Black Tulip – I love me some Hen and Miles

  90. Shannon C on December 15, 2010 at 10:31 pm

    1. Persuasion
    2. Masque of the Black Tulip
    3. Bet Me-Jennifer Crusie
    4. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

  91. Dara on December 15, 2010 at 10:36 pm

Only four? Way to make us book lovers really have to pick and choose…so I’m gonna cheat a bit!

    1. The Complete Works of Jane Austen
    2. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare
    3. Pink Carnation series (I can’t just have one…)
    4. Harry Potter series

Yeah, I’m a bit of a cheater, but you’re so cruel to limit us! πŸ™‚

  92. Camellia on December 15, 2010 at 10:37 pm

    1) Les Miserables (Because I love it and it would take ages to finish again)

    2) Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

    3) Pride and Prejudice

    4) A Tale of Two Cities

  93. Suzanne on December 15, 2010 at 11:11 pm

    1. Jane Eyre
    2. Pride & Prejudice
    3. The India Fan by Victoria Holt

    1. Outlander
    2. The Masque of the Black Tulip
    3. Kane and Able

  95. Vicky on December 16, 2010 at 12:00 am

This is a really tough choice. I really want to cheat and bring a kindle…
    1. Masque of the Black Tulip
    2. A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson
    3. The Princess Bride by William Goldman
    4. The Far Pavilions by M.M. Kaye

  96. Pam on December 16, 2010 at 12:09 am

    See Pammy. See Pammy cheat.

    1. Complete works of Jane Austen (it’s in one volume…)
    2. Brideshead Revisited
    3. Possession (A.S. Byatt)
    4. A toss up between Rebecca (Daphne du Maurier), The Historian (Elizabeth Kostova), and Jane Eyre.

And if I could throw in a Pink book it would be Seduction of the Crimson Rose.

This deserted island wouldn’t happen to have a public library, would it?

  97. Kristie on December 16, 2010 at 12:26 am

The collected works of Jane Austen
The entire Harry Potter series (I’m pretending it could all be put in one book haha)
    The host by stephenie Meyer
Count of Monte cristo by Alexandre dumas

  98. Rachel on December 16, 2010 at 12:28 am

Wow this is hard! but without cheating…
    1) Pride and Prejudice (no brainer :))
    2) Venetia, since I’m only allowed 1 Georgette Heyer
    3) The Scarlet Pimpernel (pretty much a no-brainer)
    4) I was going to say Persuasion, but then I saw someone posted Eva Ibbotson, and I remembered The Morning Gift!
    5) I just remembered Daddy Long Legs… I can’t not bring Daddy Long Legs… It’s going to have to be 5, sorry πŸ™‚

  99. Lynne on December 16, 2010 at 1:01 am

I’m too prosaic for this sort of thing. I keep imagining I’m on that island with my tote bag and for the next several years, my reading material will consist of … well, let’s see –
    1)Dictionary
2)Collected works of Jane Austen single volume
    3)King James Bible
    4)Lord of the Rings

  100. Jeff on December 16, 2010 at 1:02 am

I selected books that impacted me and if on a desert island, I hope other island inhabitants would also realize an impact in their lives:

    1) Stranger in a Strange Land
    2) Johnny Got His Gun
    3) The Bourne Identity
    4) To Kill a Mockingbird

  101. Doreen on December 16, 2010 at 1:21 am

    1. Pride and Prejudice-Jane Austen (collected works tome really would be the way to go here…)
    2. These Old Shades-Georgette Heyer
    3. The Seduction of the Crimson Rose-Lauren Willig
4.Le Petit Prince-Antoine de St. Exupery

  102. Charice on December 16, 2010 at 2:24 am

    1. P&P – Jane Austen
    2. Edith Hamilton’s Mythology
    3. Fables Collection – Bill Willingham
    4. Lisa Kleypas book (anyone would do)

I would already have Lauren Willig, Nora Roberts, Matt Sturges and Robin McKinley’s works on my person somewhere, so that wouldn’t count.

  103. Kate on December 16, 2010 at 3:33 am

    1. Jane Austen Collection (if cannot do collections, it would be P&P, though Persuasion is my favorite)
    2. The Villa by Nora Roberts
    3. Shakespeare’s Anthology
    4. Blank book to write my own musings

What a fabulous question, Lauren! Not only do we have to make a decision, we also get to see what people hold near and dear! A ‘How To Survive Anything’ book would be good… but who needs sustenance when you have a good book! πŸ™‚

  104. Judy on December 16, 2010 at 7:07 am

    I don’t like books.

  105. Katie S. on December 16, 2010 at 10:21 am

    The Chronicles of Narnia
The Betrayal of the Blood Lily

  108. Sara G. on December 16, 2010 at 3:17 pm

I love your books so the first two are (in no particular order!)

The Masque of the Black Tulip

The Temptation of the Night Jasmine ( i realized I am a lot like Charlotte in the book! Seriously!)

    Soulless: Gail Carriger

The Girl who kicked the Hornet’s Nest: Stieg Larsson

    πŸ˜€

  109. Kellie Morris on December 16, 2010 at 3:55 pm

Gee, this is tough. I’ll probably not want to take anything too dreary. I think it would have to be Pride and Prejudice, Cotillion, The Code of the Woosters and any Agatha Christie mystery.

  110. MelissaW on December 16, 2010 at 4:20 pm

    hmmm…..

    Pride and Prejudice
    Winnie-the-Pooh
    Jane Eyre
Probably Finnegan’s Wake – being on a desert island would be a good time to finish it.

I think those four are a good balance of old and new reads.

  111. Caitlin Mason on December 16, 2010 at 4:27 pm

For me, it would have to be books I could read over and over again. Those would be, in no particular order:

    1. The Phantom of the Opera
    2. Watership Down
    3. Seduction of the Crimson Rose (my favorite to date)
    4. The Hobbit

  112. Jessica Miller on December 17, 2010 at 9:32 pm

1.A Rose in Bloom by Louisa May Alcott
    2. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J. K. Rowling
    3. Going Bovine by Libba Bray
    4. The Mischief of the Mistletoe by Lauren Willig (Gotta have a great romance!! :P)
