On the Second Day of Pink Carnation….

My author gave to me… two signed cover flats of The Betrayal of the Blood Lily!

Blood Lily makes its paperback debut on January 4, in less than a month.

Today’s question is a very self-serving one. As I update the FAQs on the website, do you have any questions you would like to see answered?

(It’s okay if yours is a question someone else has already asked. That makes it legitimately a frequently asked question!)

Two winners will be chosen at random from among the comments. Winners will be announced on the Second Day of Pink Carnation, aka Tuesday.

I think I would like to know what happens with the various couples over the years, such as seeing Geoff & Letty in Mistletoe.
So I guess my question would be, Do you plan to continue giving characters and couples appearances in future books?

  2. Kat on December 13, 2010 at 11:45 am

How do you plan the Pink Carnation series? Not what do you have planned, but how do you do it.

    and

Do you have any plans to write anything other than Pink Carnation in the near future?

  3. Christine on December 13, 2010 at 11:53 am

Man all the previous questions are ones I have as well!

In Annapolis last spring, you mentioned that you were possible thinking about doing short stories to catch up with previous characters. Are you still planning on possibly doing that?

How do all of the single ladies of the Pink Carnation social circle feel? It must seem like the single ladies are dropping like flies. I know that marriage is pretty much a lady’s main goal in this era, but it must seem a little weird that they’re all happening so suddenly/quickly/etc.

How do all of the single ladies of the Pink Carnation social circle feel about all the marriages recently taking place? It must seem like the single ladies are dropping like flies. I know that marriage is pretty much a lady’s main goal in this era, but it must seem a little weird that they’re all happening so suddenly/quickly/etc.

  6. Georgia on December 13, 2010 at 12:13 pm

What are your plans for the post-carnation phase? Do you think you will continue in the same time period and setting?

  7. Elissa on December 13, 2010 at 12:21 pm

Will Jane and Amy (or Hen or Letty) be teaming up again in the near future?

And when are we going to find out what Jane has been up too?

  8. MollyJ on December 13, 2010 at 12:31 pm

I know you’ve said that you already have the next book after Orchid in the works. So, I guess I’m just wondering if there is some grand conclusion you’re working towards, or do you just plan to continue writing until you’ve drained all the creative juices (which I highly doubt will happen anytime soon)?

  9. Chartreuse on December 13, 2010 at 12:40 pm

On the second day … the author gave to me:
    2 selfsame FAQs,
And a hero in her story.
    😉

More seriously, what’s next for PC and friends, and what are you working on now? How far ahead can you work, now that the legal career’s fighting against time to be a novelist isn’t making the walls close in?

  10. Joanne M. on December 13, 2010 at 12:47 pm

Do you have plans to write other books outside the realm of the Pink Carnation? If so, can you tell us about the setting/time period/genre?

You’ve listed your favorite authors/books from the past…can you update your current favorite authors/books?

What are your favorite historical movies/costume dramas?

  11. Kari on December 13, 2010 at 12:52 pm

I would really love to know what happens further down the road for all of our favorite couples. Are they still happy, healthy, and defending England from the clutches of the French?

Also, what has Jane been up to lately? Will she ever meet a man who she finds more interesting then the mechinations of the French?

More follow ups on characters and their descendants. I love the way Eloise wasa able to discover more about Mary and Vaughan, for example.

  14. Jenna on December 13, 2010 at 1:14 pm

Will Jane and/ or Ms. Gwen get a book of their own? I Like how they play a rols in most books but will their characters get a full book dedicated to their story or even happy ending??

  15. Katie on December 13, 2010 at 1:15 pm

My question has less to do with your series and more with your personal life. What area of the law did you focus on and work in? And, to tie it in to your series, How has your work in the legal profession influenced your historical writing? Are you particularly interested in legal history and if so, will it ever play a significant role in one of your books? Thanks!

  16. Jenna on December 13, 2010 at 1:16 pm

Will we ever see follow ups on previous characters and couples?? I wanna know How everyonw is getting on in married life!

  17. Amanda on December 13, 2010 at 1:30 pm

I’d like to know how the previous characters have been doing in their married bliss–have any of them had children that can grow up to be like their parents?

Also, would you ever consider writing a modern day chicklit/romance novel? It could even be with someone we’ve met before like Pammy!

  18. Kristen S. on December 13, 2010 at 1:36 pm

Well, i voiced this question already, so sorry for repeating, but what are all the characters’ middle names?

    AND

I love love love the idea of short stories about everyone’s lives post-honeymoon loveliness. Also, I’m curious about all their children’s names! . . . yes, I do have name issues.

  19. Katelin on December 13, 2010 at 1:53 pm

I would like to see what books and articles you are using to research your books so that I could learn more about the history.

  20. Meredith on December 13, 2010 at 2:20 pm

I LOVE the idea of character follow-ups, BUT I would also really like to know how/why the character names and pseudonym’s came to be. How exactly did Turnip come to be known as Turnip? Why did Jane choose “Pink Carnation” for her noms de guerre? Why is the Black Tulip represented by that particular name and flower?

  21. Amy on December 13, 2010 at 2:25 pm

Character follow-ups, definitely. I can’t help but wonder if Arabella and Letty become BFFs.

  22. Amanda on December 13, 2010 at 3:03 pm

A follow up on the lives of past characters and when is Jane getting her own book?

  23. Vivi on December 13, 2010 at 3:03 pm

I would be interested in if you intend to bring in more characters, who are known in literature as writers or poets like Jane Austen? Maybe Goethe or Schiller? (As a German girl I need to mention them 😉 )
And both loved the life including the women.

  24. Olivia on December 13, 2010 at 3:08 pm

I am anxious to read The Mischief of the Mistletoe and would very much like to see more follow ups at in between or holiday times. I love seeing the same relationships growing and changing, reconnecting, in various situations. It’s fun! 🙂

  25. Rebecca W. on December 13, 2010 at 3:11 pm

    1) When will Tommy ever get the girl? Poor kid just can’t catch a break!

    2) What’s been going on with Richard and Amy? It’s been a while since we’ve seen them last!

  26. Lissa on December 13, 2010 at 3:21 pm

Is Ivy and Intrigue: A Very Selwick Christmas, going to be released in a paper version? Maybe as an addon to one of the upcoming books?

I’d also like to know what’s next for Amy.

  27. Lissa on December 13, 2010 at 3:23 pm

As a doc student in just one subject, I’d also like to know your secret… how on earth did you complete a PhD in history, a Juris Doctorate and start writing books? I can barely get through my proposal.

  28. Jessica on December 13, 2010 at 3:38 pm

Have you ever thought of branching out further into a contemporary setting…something similar to the Eloise chapters, but a whole novel?

  29. Diandra on December 13, 2010 at 4:02 pm

I was hoping for an update to Richard and Miles’s tiff — only because Miles is my favorite of all of the male leads 🙂 Will these two be revisited in upcoming novel?

  30. Elizabeth aka Miss Eliza on December 13, 2010 at 4:10 pm

Damn, you’re so good at answering questions… so here’s one relating to something new! Do we ever get to spend some time in New Orleans in a future book?

  31. Diandra on December 13, 2010 at 4:15 pm

    2nd question: sorry!
What’s the inspiration behind all of the titles? And in Betrayal of the Blood Lily, what is the significance of the villain being named the Marigold? Also, for Betrayal, why does Jack (Alex’s brother) call himself the Moonflower?

  32. Dara on December 13, 2010 at 4:16 pm

I think I’m with everyone else, will there be any follow-ups on our favorite characters? And when will Jane finally get her own dashing hero? …Even though she obviously doesn’t need a man to do things for her! 😉

  33. Meredith on December 13, 2010 at 4:37 pm

Will there be a Lord Vaughn prequel? He is such an interesting character. In fact, are there going to be prequels for any of the characters (most especially for Jane)?

  34. Stephanie Ball on December 13, 2010 at 4:38 pm

i agree when does Jane and miss Gwen get books of their own. I think Gwen’s book would be hilarious. Also what ever happened to the other couples i am assuming from mistletoe Letty had a baby, but what about hen and miles, what are they doing still spying or have they settled to family life.

  35. Joanne M. on December 13, 2010 at 4:43 pm

I’s also like to know about your writing style/process. When are you most creative (at night? early morn?) Where do you do most of your writing/plotting? (at home? library? coffee shop? elsewhere?) Do you listen to music when you write? If so, what?

  36. AlisonH on December 13, 2010 at 5:14 pm

How is it that all these diaries and letters have remained hidden so long in english country homes? One would think that they would have been burnt or flooded at some time in the not too distant past, as generations of diarists would have added to the pile. One can only imagine the elaborate additions necessary to house the family library…

  37. Dayana on December 13, 2010 at 6:44 pm

Will Eloise and Colin ever get married?

    That is my question ^.^

  38. Amanda Isabel on December 13, 2010 at 6:49 pm

How can I entice you to come on a roadtrip to promote the books in Canada? 😀 Honestly, I would love to see you in my home country, spreading the Pink love! 😀

  39. Chelsea on December 13, 2010 at 6:50 pm

How do you come up with the names for the books/spy’s? Pick up a book of flowers and close your eyes and chose a page?

  40. Lauren Smith on December 13, 2010 at 8:29 pm

Hi Lauren! This is Lauren Smith (I met you at the Ann Arbor signing in November). I’m that 3L law student and pursuing a career in writing. My question for the FAQ update would be that I would for you to give a starter list for research books for us writers wanting to write Regency or other historical romances. Do you have any favorite books you rely on to make your own novels feel real and in the proper era?
    Thanks,
    Lauren Smith

  41. Karen Warden on December 13, 2010 at 9:35 pm

Will Richard’s sister find that perfect someone?

And I’d love to know more about Richard and his cronies when they were younger, as well as Henrietta and her girls… sort of a prequel.

And Richard’s dramatic butler who loves to dress up and act the part.

  42. Rebecca on December 13, 2010 at 9:45 pm

Do Jane’s parents and sisters know that she is the Pink Carnation? And will Agnes or one of her other sisters ever join Jane in Paris?

  43. Alexis on December 13, 2010 at 10:34 pm

I would like to see some more of the younger generation. Do you have plans for adding them into some of the future books?

  44. Diana on December 13, 2010 at 10:39 pm

Like everyone else, I want to know if you will include updates on our past heroines and heroes in future books. I’d also love a list of your favorite costume dramas. But the list I’d really love to see (I have a thing for lists) is one of the characters’ favorite reading material- everything from the girls’ romances to philosophy to their preferred newspapers.

Aaand…this is the big ‘un: have you ever been approached with an offer to adapt the Pink books to screen or considered pursuing their adaptation? Personally I think they’d make a great television series…

  45. Anna Kozlowski on December 14, 2010 at 12:03 am

Is Amy ever going to get back into the spy game? I mean yes, she’s running this spy school, but really, that’s just not the same!

And like #44 said, I think the first book especially would make a really good mini series or movie of some sorts. Anyone ask you about making a show? I would watch!

  46. Andrea Clark on December 14, 2010 at 12:29 am

I love the idea of updates on past characters – I also love the Xmas themed books – the Ivy and Intrigue – and the Mischief of the Mistletoe. Would also love to see a Vaughn prequel. And, I wish that some of the chapters with the Pink Carnation characters would have excerpts from the diaries or letters (and in that style) that Eloise is reading from. Also more of Eloise’s reaction to what she is reading would be great!!!!

  47. Julie on December 14, 2010 at 12:50 am

Will there be another novella for one of the other characters?

    and

How many more pink books do you think there will be?

  48. Rachel on December 14, 2010 at 10:37 am

Wow … all super great questions!
And skimming them definitely makes me realize that my mother and I aren’t the only ones who sit around discussing what we think may be going on in the lives of past Pinks … with that, I second Susan’s question:
Do you plan to continue giving characters and couples appearances in future books?
    Thanks! 🙂

  49. Cate on December 15, 2010 at 1:41 am

Will we see the rest of Captain Alex Reid’s family (his mysterious brother OR his sisters) in stories of their own?

  50. Amanda R on December 18, 2010 at 12:10 am

Will Miles and Richard ever make up?

  51. KatrinaG on February 14, 2011 at 10:13 pm

Will there ever be intrigue in Canada? I’m thinking Kingston, or Toronto? There was a lot of back and forth stuff going on between the Loyalists and the Americans (and their friendliness to the French), and things were kind of tense in Lower Canada (Quebec) as well.

Also, because its Valentine’s Day… do you think you’ll ever have a short story that takes place around Valentine’s Day?
