Mini-Contest #3

Only five days until The Betrayal of the Blood Lily!!

Blood Lily features the third in a triumvirate of three very different friends, Henrietta (The Masque of the Black Tulip), Charlotte (The Temptation of the Night Jasmine) and Penelope. If one had to type them in a broad-brush way, Henrietta is the one who holds the group together, Charlotte the day-dreamer, and Penelope the wild child.

Of the three of them, who do you like best, and why?

One commenter, chosen at random, will receive an audio copy of The Temptation of the Night Jasmine.

    I just like entering contests…

Henrietta is my favorite character in all the books. She’s bold, loyal and smart, everything I love in my friends.

  2. Sealz on January 7, 2010 at 12:15 pm

I like Charlotte. She might not be flashy but it would be great to talk daydreams and books with. I had a roommate just like her in college!

  3. Natasha on January 7, 2010 at 12:19 pm

I identify best with Charlotte… I’m usually lost in daydreams and have my nose in a book most of the time too! 😉

  4. Katie on January 7, 2010 at 12:22 pm

I have always been fond of Henrietta, but I identify most with Charlotte. I have always been a bit shy, like to daydream, and read all the time.

  5. Georgia on January 7, 2010 at 12:35 pm

I think Henrietta is the most likeable of the three. Maybe it is because Black Tulip was my favorite book in the series. I identified most with Letty, but since it is not one of the choices, my vote goes to Hen.

  6. Courtney on January 7, 2010 at 12:43 pm

Hen is my favorite. She’s sharp, and funny, but she’s also very kind-hearted–the sort of person who makes the best kind of friend. That said, I too identify with Charlotte, though. Especially when it comes to imagining how a scenario will play out, only to have it turn out completely different when it comes around in real life. That is definitely me!

  7. Kristie on January 7, 2010 at 1:00 pm

I can’t say that this is a fair question to ask, since we all know Henrietta and Charlotte more than Penelope. I would rather answer this question after reading Blood Lily, when I really know Penelope.

Between Henrietta and Charlotte though, I’d have to say Charlotte. She’s a bit of a romantic and I think that I am too. I’m more like Charlotte than Henrietta, I think :o)

  8. Veronika on January 7, 2010 at 1:03 pm

Another vote for Henrietta here! I love her dynamic with Miles, and that she is the balance between the two more extreme personalities she is close to. I am looking forward to knowing more about Penelope though…

  9. Diana on January 7, 2010 at 1:16 pm

Henrietta…I am more like Charlotte, nose in a book and apt to daydream, which means people like me need a Henrietta in our lives to balance us out. I am looking forward to getting to learning more about Penelope.

  10. Tina C. on January 7, 2010 at 1:30 pm

Charlotte is definitely my favorite, not merely because she is the bookworm day-dreamer that we can all, at some point, relate to, but also for her practicality in dealing with difficult situations. She was accurately described as “wrought iron”, beautiful and delicate to behold on the outside, but virtually indestructible in substance! And she got the duke!

  11. Amy on January 7, 2010 at 1:31 pm

I’d have to go with Charlotte. I can definately relate to her the most. Daydreamer, and always does the right thing, even when she would rather not. Plus, the picture on the cover reminds me soooo much of my bff from high school, it’s not even funny!

  12. lAUra on January 7, 2010 at 1:36 pm

It’s hard to say, since I haven’t read Blood Lily yet, but I think I’m really going to like Penelope. She sounds feisty and it doesn’t seem like things would ever be boring with her around. I think she would be refreshingly honest in the regency world of polite manners.

And now an awful pun about how:
Pen is mightier than the sword!

    lol.

  13. Ashlee on January 7, 2010 at 1:40 pm

I absolutely adore Hen in whatever book she’s in – she’s hilarious and always there for her friends. I’d like to say I’m a little of both Charlotte and Henrietta though. I’m always lost in daydreaming and reading, but I love to laugh and just act silly with whoever’s around me 🙂

  14. Nancy on January 7, 2010 at 1:40 pm

RED HEADS UNITE!!! I vote for Penelope, we gingers have to stick together! Most heroines are blond, brunett, or raven haired, us poor auberns, carrots, flames, and coppers are horribly under represented. There’s always Eloise, but she is, sad to say, bookless, and Amy had a Reddish hue, but out side the Pink series we’re out in the cold. I can only think of 2 off the top of my head; Meggie Cleary (Thorn Birds) and Katherine (by Anya Seton), both of whoms lives were giant piles of misery! Penelope finaly brings some much needed representation to our misunderstood coloring.

  15. Carole on January 7, 2010 at 1:44 pm

Well, I’m more like Letty, but out of the group of three, I would have to say Charlotte. Out of my group of friends, I’m overlooked sometimes. I’m “ignored” by men, because my friends are more outgoing then I am. Also, I tend to find myself daydreaming alot. I’m also a romantic at heart. More than likely, you’ll see a book in my hands or a my head buried in a book. That is why I find myself more leaning towards Charlotte.

    ~Carole

  16. Jessica on January 7, 2010 at 1:45 pm

Henrietta is my favorite of all your characters, so of course I’ve got to go with her here!

  17. Lisa Maddox on January 7, 2010 at 1:49 pm

Being a red head, very Irish, and not so discrete I feel that I should pick Pen, but I find Hen to be my favorite. It is her quick wit and ability to make a wonderful fool of herself that makes me enjoy her character and if she was a real person someone who I would seek out as a friend.

  18. Alyson on January 7, 2010 at 1:51 pm

I like Hen best, even though I am more of a Charlotte. But for all Hen and Charlotte are alike in that they’re caring and loyal (and many other fine attributes), Hen is the go-getter. She’s not afraid of going after what she wants nor afraid of attention. She’s the most down to earth and who wouldn’t want a guy like Miles by their side.

  19. Carolyn on January 7, 2010 at 1:56 pm

This is a tough one! As far as the dynamic between the three friends, I like Charlotte the best. There’s nothing wrong with living your life through books! However, I love Henrietta as the pesky little sister, which we don’t see as much in her relationships with Charlotte and Penelope. Of course, I’m sure that in about a week I’ll have plenty of reasons for loving Penelope just as much as the other two.

  20. hadley on January 7, 2010 at 2:04 pm

henrietta is such a fun, dynamic character – she combines spunk with purpose, which makes scenes with her such a joy to read. not to mention the fact that she can interact easily and amusingly with seemingly every other character in the series…

  21. Lauren on January 7, 2010 at 2:05 pm

I don’t really know as much about Penelope as the other two, so I’ll have to go with Charlotte. Like a few others said, I’m a lot like Letty, but I have a friend like Charlotte and absolutely adore her. I’m not as much of a fan of Henrietta as most seem to be, and I have no idea why. It’s not that I dislike her by any stretch, but she might be my least favorite heroine of the five books released so far.

  22. Mayghan on January 7, 2010 at 2:08 pm

I like Charlotte the best. I love her romantic, head in the clouds, nose in a book personality. I identify with her the most.

  23. AngelB on January 7, 2010 at 2:16 pm

I have so many personalities, I can be any one of them, depending on the day.

    🙂

  24. AngelB on January 7, 2010 at 2:18 pm

Sorry my keyboard is messed up…

I like Henrietta the best just because, out of the three, she has the least issues/demons she’s dealing with. Besides turning into her mother, that is.

  25. amanda on January 7, 2010 at 2:21 pm

i love them all, but it has to be penelope, simply because that is my five year old daughter’s name!! 😀

  26. Kate on January 7, 2010 at 2:24 pm

100% Hen. Black Tulip is probably my favorite of the Pinks.

  27. Laura on January 7, 2010 at 2:41 pm

I’d have to go with Charlotte – I identify the most with her and would enjoy discussing books with her. Nothing against Hen or Penelope, they are pretty cool people too!

  28. KMD on January 7, 2010 at 2:41 pm

This is a tough one, because I identify with different aspects of each one of them. I agree that I am probably more like Letty then Hen or Charlotte or Penelope, but by the end of Crimson Rose I ended up really liking Mary too…

Okay, enough waffling and before I change my mind again; I like Charlotte the best out of the three. She’s sweet and she’s always lost in a good book (like me), so she wins.

  29. Nikki M on January 7, 2010 at 3:25 pm

Like most others are saying, Hen is my favourite of the three and there’s not much I could say that hasn’t already been said here. So yes, I like Hen the best out the three, not that I don’t love Charlotte and hopefully Penelope when we get to know her a bt better.

  30. Anastasia on January 7, 2010 at 3:42 pm

Hen is by far my fave…rather like myself, or so my husband thinks (I tend to periodically read bits and pieces to him as I go).

  31. Elizabeth aka Miss Eliza on January 7, 2010 at 3:44 pm

Pen. Because she’s the least like me and would, probably in real life, get on my nerves a little bescause I’m a combo of Henrietta and Charlotte, a bookworm with control freak tendancies… That’s why Pen is so fun to read about!

  32. Sheila on January 7, 2010 at 3:49 pm

Gotta be Charlotte: she’s so like me, and so glad Lauren has been able to make her dreams come true

  33. Sennin on January 7, 2010 at 4:08 pm

Hen, because I too have a truly deep and passionate love for adjectives.

  34. Brittany on January 7, 2010 at 4:09 pm

Hen was my favorite in the beginning because she is witty and adventurous, but I do really like Charlotte and her idealism.

  35. Stacy Zulueta on January 7, 2010 at 4:18 pm

Definatly Penelope, she packed more fun and flirtation in one out take then poor little Charlotte did in her whole book.

  36. Katie on January 7, 2010 at 4:33 pm

I have to say Penelope, she’s fun and she’s taking us to India, INDIA!!! Elephants, saris, heat, HEAT!!! I woke up and it was bloody -20 degrees outside! Hen had deacent weather, Charlotte’s was in bloody winter, but the wondrus Penelope is going to distract me from my abject misery with heat, and tropical plants, and no more bloody snow!

  37. Hillary on January 7, 2010 at 4:35 pm

I would definitely have to say Hen is my favorite. Anyone can be a day-dreamer or a wild child, but if you don’t have the one who keeps everyone together, what are you left with?

  38. Emily S on January 7, 2010 at 4:37 pm

I am most like Charlotte, a day-dreaming romantic who often is self-doubting. While I enjoyed being able to relate to her character, I found the out-of-self experience created by following Henrietta, in The Mask of the Black Tulip, more exciting, a better release from my everyday life. That is what makes her my favorite of the three women, she brought me freedom and enjoyment.

  39. Brenda on January 7, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Definatly Hen, her book was my absolute all time favorite!

  40. Brenda P. on January 7, 2010 at 4:42 pm

Hen. However, Lauren you write them all so well.

  41. Magdalena on January 7, 2010 at 4:58 pm

I feel like Penelope is and will be my favorite still. I identify best with her, lolz.

  42. Cat Blankenship on January 7, 2010 at 5:07 pm

Definitely Hen because she is just like me! Also that was my favorite book!

  43. Emily L. on January 7, 2010 at 5:13 pm

I definitely like Henrietta the best of the three – she is strong and has a no-nonsense outlook on life. She’s also a very colorful character!

  44. Alex on January 7, 2010 at 5:37 pm

Charlotte because like me she loves to read, has the perfect man in her head and has overbearing family.

I cannot wait for this book, it is the only thing keeping me going since finals start the day after the release!

  45. Chelsea on January 7, 2010 at 5:56 pm

Though I think it’s a little unfair to make a decision before reading Penelope’s book… I identify more with Charlotte, but I love Henrietta.

  46. Chelsey on January 7, 2010 at 6:02 pm

I’m re-reading Masque of the Black Tulip right now, so…..Henrietta is close to my heart (and fresh in my mind). But I do feel like I can relate the best with Charlotte. I can’t wait to read Blood Lily to find out more about Penelope in all her fiery glory and sass. I think I’ll come to love her character the best. 5 days seems soooo long!

  47. Julie on January 7, 2010 at 6:05 pm

I love Hen the most. She is so funny, adventurous, and very down to earth. I do love Penelope’s flare and charlotte’s imagination, but Hen is who i relate with the most.

  48. Amanda on January 7, 2010 at 6:13 pm

Its hard to say without reading Pen’s book yet. But I think Charlotte is my favorite. She had the most to do to “find” herself and her happiness.

  49. kellie on January 7, 2010 at 6:21 pm

Without having read Penelope’s story, I wold say I like Henrietta the best I wish I were more like her; however, I am more like Charlotte. One day I’m going to fall down a manhole while dreamig and walking!

  50. Erin on January 7, 2010 at 7:06 pm

I would have to go with Penelope, because with out her story we would not be getting any more info on Collin and Eloise. I have to admit they are my favorite relationship throughout all the books. I know, my answer has nothing to do with their personalities.

  51. faith on January 7, 2010 at 8:08 pm

Henrietta by far. I think she’s a strong character who knows what she wants as isn’t afraid to tell everyone that.

  52. The Duchess Regina on January 7, 2010 at 8:30 pm

My favorite character out of the three is Henrietta. It was rather hard to chose since I identify much more with Jane or Mary. Though Hen is very likable and loyal. I thought Charlotte was a bit too naive, and while I admire Penelope’s forthrightness I just don’t like how she conducts her life. (I find it ironic how she’s named Penelope…)

  53. Liz on January 7, 2010 at 8:52 pm

Charlotte is definitely my favorite.I just loved her and Roberts relationship.Plus I always have my nose in a book too!

  54. Rachel on January 7, 2010 at 8:57 pm

I identify (and like) Hen the most – she has a practical streak entirely lacking in the other two. Charlotte is sweet, but lost in her own world and Penelope is wild to a fault (not that I don’t love them too :)) Henrietta gets things done and has fun doing them – my kind of girl!

  55. Danyelle on January 7, 2010 at 10:02 pm

I like Charlotte the best. She is optimistic, kind and looks for the best in people. If she was a real person I could see myself being friends with her.

  56. Amanda on January 7, 2010 at 10:10 pm

Hen is my favorite but I think that’s because I like her and Miles’ story the most.

  57. K.S. on January 7, 2010 at 10:21 pm

Hen is the character I could imagine being friends with. She just seems like a regular girl who is always open to the fun in life.
Although, the number of times I have read “Evelina” tells me that I am more of a Charlotte:)

  58. Hortencia on January 7, 2010 at 11:00 pm

Love Henrietta! Although identify more with Charlotte! Still would love to have friends like these!

  59. Belen on January 7, 2010 at 11:38 pm

It would have to be Hen. She’s very witty, and someone that would keep you on your toes at all times. She the kind of friend that hopefully everyone has.

  60. Anna Kozlowski on January 8, 2010 at 12:05 am

I think I like Penelope best. She’s crazy and the one who thinks up scandelous ideas and eggs the others on. She also reminds me of my friend who like her seems to get into some serious trouble but always manages to turn it around through sheer luck or hard work. I think Penelope will end up turning around a crappy situation.

  61. Kate P on January 8, 2010 at 12:33 am

Penelope – definitely. Too smart for her own good.

  62. Tiffany on January 8, 2010 at 1:02 am

I would have to choose Charlotte. Yeah, she may not have any expiernce where men are concerned, but I for one was very proud that she told Robert no until she was absolutely sure he loved her. And in front of the King! Kudos to Charlotte.

  63. AmyMc on January 8, 2010 at 2:49 am

As others have pointed out, we don’t know Pen very well yet, but from what we know of each heroine, Hen is my favorite. I think we relate best to the characters we are most like, or would most like to emulate. In my case, Hen’s both.

  64. MollyJ on January 8, 2010 at 4:05 am

I think my favorite is Henrietta. Though, I agree this is a little difficult to judge without reading Penelope’s book.

I love Henrietta because of her intelligence, loyalty, and playfulness. In regards to her friends, I believe she’s a nice balance between Charlotte and Penelope. In her relationship with Miles (before and during) she has some of the romantic idealism that Charlotte has while also having the wild-child instinct to do something like dress as a maid and snoop in a deadly spy’s house right under her nose.

  65. Jessica C on January 8, 2010 at 6:03 am

Definately Charlotte. I was like her growing up – not quite as shy (I had two brothers, they tend to knock shyness out of you!) but I constantly had my nose in a book and was always off with the faeries, rambling through day-dream worlds much more interesting than this boring one!

  66. Katelin on January 8, 2010 at 8:05 am

I’d choose Henrietta because I relate to her. We’re very similar so I really understand her actions and motivations.

  67. Amy S on January 8, 2010 at 8:35 am

From what I’ve read so far I’d have to go with Pen. Just because I’m soooo much like Charlotte, and have always wanted to be the ‘outgoing, adventurous one’.

(and I’d really like red hair, but oh well…)

  68. Kristen on January 8, 2010 at 9:27 am

Penelope, hands down. As my mom as says, I have to do things the difficult way, and Penelope seems to have that issue too. I really can’t wait to read her story next week!

  69. Debra Callaway on January 8, 2010 at 10:14 am

I am more like Charlotte but I think as a Character I like Hen better

  70. Julie on January 8, 2010 at 10:51 pm

I have to vote for Henrietta. I too felt that I was most like her. I related to her and absolutely loved her story.
