Pink Poll

At the suggestion of Catherine (thanks, Catherine!), I’m conducting an informal Pink poll:

Which character do you most identify with and why?

  1. AngelB on March 17, 2009 at 2:27 pm

    woo-hoo I’m first.

I’m definitely the Duchess of Uppington. I’m bossy, know it all in the most motherly way possible, have experienced more than I’ll ever tell my kids, and have a gooey lovey relationship with my husband.

  2. Katie on March 17, 2009 at 3:32 pm

Eloise!!! We share a sad passion for history and classic literature. She thinks like I do, her friends bare an unsettling resemblence to mine (except instead of the names Pammy, Alex, and Serena mine are Lara, Bekah, and Sennin) and she dresses like I do (three inch heels, harring bone, and tweed). But the weirdest thing of all is that she even has the same hair color as I do! The only difference is I don’t forsee a hot brit in future who has read all my favotiete classics as well as Ian Fleming, so in 20 years I’ll probably end up more like Miss Gwen:)

  3. Maddie on March 17, 2009 at 3:35 pm

Ooh that’s difficult to say… Before Night Jasmine it was Letty, but I really don’t remember why… Oops! And that is why I am rereading the series! But now I would have to say it’s Charlotte because I too wish that life could be like what I read. Unrealistic, but a girl can dream :)!

  4. Jilli-bean on March 17, 2009 at 4:12 pm

Letty/Hen combo myself. I love making random observations and was always underfoot of the boys while still having my gal pals. My room mate actually schemed to get me and my boyfriend together much like Charlotte and Penelope did because we were too shy/bone headed to figure it out. Now we tend to rib and threaten each other sweetly in public but still love one another like Miles and Hen. Much like Geoff and Letty however, he never saw himself with someone like me but is glad that he did as am I. Like Letty, my Mother sometimes forced responsibilities beyond my years/not of my own on me to keep things running and organised around our house. My sister’s is the apple of boys’ eyes while I’m simply ‘the sister.’ I definitely share Letty’s perceived plight of less-than-perfect looks with a decent heart to back it up. At least, I hope I do. They’re my fave characters and I loved seeing Hen in Night Jasmine I’m starting to miss Letty terribly.

  5. Lois on March 17, 2009 at 4:16 pm

Mine is hopefully based on a correct recollection. . . 😉 But I would go with Letty. The way I remember the Emerald Ring, she was the quieter, the one that the suitors didn’t flock to, at least especially when compared to Mary. While I don’t have a sister that would be Mary, I think I’d still fit Letty more.

And I have Henrietta’s similar imagination when it comes to naming animals, though Kitty the kitty is a real Kitty and not a doll. Well, she would think she’s a doll too, but anyway, she needs to be fed and all. 🙂

And actually, I would be mighty proud if I turned out like Miss Gwen. Love her! 🙂

  6. Stacie Andrews on March 17, 2009 at 4:28 pm

I’m not sure about me, but my fiancé is most like Lord Vaughn. He’s intelligent, clever, and knows how to infuriate people in one sentence. He talks in a cryptic manner sometimes too, but that’s mainly when he’s around people he knows wont understand him anyway. Sometimes I’m the only one who knows what he’s talking about, or who knows when he’s insulting someone. Just like Mary, I am the only one who can keep up with him. Also, just like Mary and Sebastian Vaughn, my fiancé and I are madly in love!

  7. Stephanie Stoddard on March 17, 2009 at 5:50 pm

Charlotte.. I am the biggest book nerd ever. I was obsessed with and used to “hunt” for unicorns. my two best friends growing up call me unicorn because i am so whimsical. I trust easily but once you break it i have a hard time letting you back in. I also want to see the good in everyone and try to help those that need it, but sometimes i am to busy with other stuff to notice. I also had the whole Knight in shinning armor dream, which is probably why my husband is so darn amazing. Though he often feels like i may love my books more. I would totally pretend the gargoyles on the roof are heads of state and give them names and personalities.. i was so excited when i saw that. So ya i am definitely Charlotte

  8. Stephanie Stoddard on March 17, 2009 at 5:55 pm

Oh and i had an imaginary friend growing up named Penelope. My mom never could figure out where i got the name from.. slightly odd coincident

  9. Alex on March 17, 2009 at 6:25 pm

Letty and Charlotte combination. I’m like letty because I’m sensible and always taking care of things and worrysome, plus the blonde-red-brown hair mix and freckles, and charlotte because I love to read and am always day dreaming and trying to escape from my world into books and my own writings(screenplays and books, some historical(definitely don’t always belong in this time period), some modern).

  10. Katelin on March 17, 2009 at 6:28 pm

I’d have to say Henrietta the similarities are kind of frightening. I had a pink bunny named bunny when I was little. I sing and performed Caro Mio Ben for several recitals. I also grew up with an older brother who I tried to emulate and often ended up underfoot.
I also tend to think a little bit like Hen. I’m not quite as outgoing as she is however. But, When I’m with people I know I never stop talking.

  11. Jacqueline on March 17, 2009 at 6:38 pm

Definitely Letty. Too plump, too many freckles, and auburn hair. I started reading The Emerald Ring, thinking that neither Letty, nor Geoff, we very likable characters. I realized it was because I was exactly like Letty. The boys usually chatted up my friends first, and I’m terrible at flirting, because I am not subtle, and vague references usually go over my head. While every woman wants to be loved for herself, I have also always wanted a mutual understanding of love than the fiery passions that die over time.

  12. Nikki M on March 17, 2009 at 6:49 pm

I think I’m a jummble between Letty, Hen and Charlotte.

I’d probably have to settle mostly on Letty though.
Although I don’t have a sister, I’m shadowed by my friends. I’m a pretty determinded person and when I try to help someone or something, it usually turns to muck.
I’m a little older than my years due to my mother I run alot of things in our household and am slightly motherly. Plus I’m a little proud and a little naive like I think Letty to be…
I haven’t read Emerald Ring in a while though, so I could be talking a load of rubbish 😀

  13. Lauren T on March 17, 2009 at 6:58 pm

I would have to say Letty, a little managing (ok a lot managing), a little stubborn, and quite willing to avoid be compared with my sister.

  14. Catherine on March 17, 2009 at 7:07 pm

How about a combo of several of them? I have to say that I outwardly seem more like Letty (quiet, non-threatening) but inwardly, and to those who know me best, I’m more a cross between Amy (wild imagination, passionate about righting injustice) and Mary (fierce determination, loves clever banter & secret barbs). Perhaps even a tiny dash of Vaughn – tongue in cheek perfectly sums up my normal conversational style.

  15. Alexandra on March 17, 2009 at 9:15 pm

I haven’t read Night Jasmine yet but I think I’m a Hen/Letty combonation. Like Hen, I’m outgoing but have protective friends (acting like big brothers) that can sometimes get too overprotective. Like Letty, I have had a lot of responsibility to shoulder from a young age and that has made my character much different than I would have been otherwise. Plus, a Miles/Geoff combo is my exact guy type.

  16. Jessica S on March 17, 2009 at 11:05 pm

    I am also a Letty/Hen/Charlotte combo:

Letty: too plump, too plain, never the girl that got anyone’s attention, just too wrong…

Hen: her way with words, way too much like my mother, never the heroine but kind of the sensible one on the side (like when she figures she won’t be the tragic heroine dead in the chase, but just injured and cranky…yeah, that would happen to me, too)

Charlotte: always reading! Daydreaming about books or movies come to life…but I learned to be very happy with my romantic reality, which is:

My husband is Geoff in Miles’ body. Seriously.

  17. Catherine on March 18, 2009 at 5:16 am

Oh my! When I saw this I literally ran squealing through my flat and burst into all my flatmates’ rooms. Snif! So proud (ah what a nerd…) Thanks though, Lauren, you totally made my day!

As I said, I consider myself a hen (a popular opinion I see) Aside from the fact that Miles is far and away my favorite hero, I’m also a singer, I tend to push my friends while never quite following through on my own advice, and I know a little more than a debutant should about what goes on in gentlemens’ clubs, though I like to think that like Hen I’m smart enough no avoid those Martin Frobishers out there.

That said, I have a touch of Charlotte’s whimsey, Letty’s level head, Amy’s impulsiveness, Mary’s..well Mary’s hair at least (I wish I was as cool as her) and though we don’t know her very well yet, something of Penelope’s spunk. And I’m clearly a fan of living through historical women like Eloise. Geez Lauren, way to write a series about women that every girl can relate to!

  18. Kristen on March 18, 2009 at 8:09 am

I feel left out. I relate most to Miles with a little bit of Vaughn. (odd, I know).

Like Miles- Very enthusiastic, whole heartedly loyal, subtlety has never been my thing, and when I get excited…well let’s just say that I’ve been compared to a puppy before… I’m not exactly a crowd blender like Geoff either. I do think I’m not as “act first, think second” as he is, but I do always manage to have more friends who are smarter than I am (great way to learn things by the way). And I have parents who hate it when I crash their empty-nest party (I’m 23, you think they’d still like me).

Then again, I do love a good snide comment, and I like to think I’m good at it. I’m obsessed with dressing well. I don’t trust easily, but once I do it’s there for good. Intrigue fascinates me. I can keep a secret longer than I can keep the person who told it to me around. I don’t have any non-dead ex anything out there but I do have more skeletons in my closet than anyone would ever guess (not all bad, but all unknown).

I am still holding out hope for a female character that I relate to more, but for now I’ll just be the only one who seems more like the heroes.

  19. Rose Orchard on March 18, 2009 at 5:50 pm

I think I’m mostly like Letty with a little of Amy thrown in. Letty believes herself “a little too short, a little too plump”; Bingo…. that’s me. Also very organized, and want to fix all wrongs quickly. I always step up to take charge of things that I think need organization and direction… not always a good idea. (retired Air Traffic Controller – the attitude kind of goes with the territory).

The Amy part of me is being adventurous and daring; however, at my age I now find these pleasures mostly in organized travel and books like Lauren’s. Thanks Lauren…

  20. Stephanie on March 18, 2009 at 6:31 pm

Definitely Eloise!! I love history, literature, and am a complete klutz at times! I tend to make Jane Austen references as well. Also, my bangs always tend to be too short to place behind my ears!

  21. Kit on March 18, 2009 at 10:15 pm

I’m going to have to go with a Geoff/Letty combination.

Like Geoff, I hate the public’s attention, however I love knowing that I played an important role in organizing a raid, (or my world’s equivalent!). Also like the Geoff I’ve imagined, I seem to suffer from a “if I didn’t do it, it’s not done right” sort of mentality. Ald finally, I’ve never been comfortable in crowds, and I really can’t dance all that well =]

As for my Letty side, I love to organize and run things that may not seem important, but are. I’m what we’ll classify as the “smart sister” as opposed to my “pretty, funny sister” and the “sporty blonde sister” I’ve never been very popular with the boys, but that’s really alright with me.

  22. Erica on March 19, 2009 at 10:38 am

I’d have to go with Mary. Not because I look down on people or treat people poorly in certain circumstances (I’m actually quite nice!), but because I know what I’m worth and I’m not willing to settle for less. Settle for less, get less :o) And that’s what I love about Mary; she’s not afraid to go after what she wants, to know what she deserves, or to stake a claim.

  23. Michelle on March 19, 2009 at 11:23 am

I think I am most like Charlotte. I identify with Letty too. Both are responsible and caring, and I also see Letty and Charlotte as the girls who “mother” their family and friends, looking out for their best interests. I often due that for my sister and friends. However like Charlotte I too am an avid reader who leaves her books around the house!!!!!

  24. Joanna on March 19, 2009 at 12:37 pm

Definitely Eloise. I overanalyze everything with guys, and I love reading different tidbits about people in history. I also definitely like faired-haired guys more than dark-haired guys for some reason. Colin sounds yummy. Although, I’m not as clutzy as she is…hmmm.

  25. Liz on March 19, 2009 at 8:13 pm

Letty and Charlotte because I feel like I am not the great beauty (Mary) or the feisty one (like Henrietta and Penelope), but kind of average. Luckily both of them prove they’re worthy heroines in the end! 🙂

  26. Camille la Flamme on March 20, 2009 at 2:37 am

Mary. I know, it’s kind of horrible, but…I don’t know…I’ve always run more to Scarlett than Anne Shirley or (heaven forbid) Isabella Swan, and I adore Mary as a strong, practical character.

  27. Carole on March 22, 2009 at 6:18 pm

Oooooh. I to say Hen, but now I think I’m more like Letty. Like her I’m short, freckled beyond counting, and have the same issue with my hair. I can’t have it stay. If my hair was a little more gold and my eyes blue, not brown, we could be sisters. Also, Geoff is my favorite guy. Yum.

  28. Carole on March 22, 2009 at 6:19 pm

Oooooh. I use to say Hen, but now I think I’m more like Letty. Like her I’m short, freckled beyond counting, and have the same issue with my hair. I can’t have it stay. If my hair was a little more gold and my eyes blue, not brown, we could be sisters. Also, Geoff is my favorite guy. Yum.

  29. Ashley on March 22, 2009 at 11:18 pm

Hmm…I think I am a Hen/Charlotte/Geoff combo. I can be impulsive and feisty like Hen and I have her voice, but I am also a major day-dreamer like Charlotte–I am always hoping for my prince charming to find me (or me to find him, either way works)! And, like Geoff, I am only seen when I wish to be 😉

  30. AmyE on March 28, 2009 at 6:32 pm

I think I am a bit of each of them. I am holding out to find out more about Jane. One thing I do know – when I get old enough to do it justice I am going to be Miss Gwen! Oh, how she makes me smile.

  31. Jenna L on March 29, 2009 at 8:01 pm

Well honestly I’d have to Henerietta because we both have obnoxious Husbands and always have to put them in their place. My Husband is an equal mix of Miles and Richard which I found odd, it’s like bipolarism in a way isn’t it? He can be such a dope at times (miles) and yet so clever (Richard). But for myself I’m a lot like Hen.
