In Which We Have a Rather Scrumptious Sort of Contest….

Look what I found when I moved earlier this year?

Two original ARCs of The Masque of the Black Tulip!

But they looked rather lonely by themselves, so I decided to pair them with a few friends: the section of the Pink series I tend to think of as “Henrietta and Co”, Pink III up through Pink VI.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a pile of books must be in want of a reader, which means… it’s time for our first Black Tulip Anniversary Month contest!

When I decided to hold a series of contests to celebrate the tenth anniversary of The Masque of the Black Tulip, one contest idea leaped out at me. (No, not you, Turnip– you’re a character, not a contest. And, please, take off that tulip costume!)

If there’s one thing anyone thinks of when they think of the hero of The Masque of the Black Tulip, it is….

“My manly physique? My floppy lock of hair?”

Okay, Miles. I know it’s your anniversary and all that, but you’re meant to stay in the book, remember? Ix-nay on the commentary.

As I was going to say, before I was so rudely interrupted, the one thing I associate most with Miles Dorrington is….

“His utterly brilliant and beautiful wife who really does far more to thwart French spies than some flower-named siblings one could mention?”

Has my book sprung a leak? Now it’s Henrietta playing peanut gallery. I knew I should have booked them on that tenth anniversary cruise….

In any event, when I think of The Masque of the Black Tulip, I think of… ginger biscuits. (Also French spies, but they’re less scrumptiously delicious.)

So, for your first anniversary month contest, here’s your question:

— What’s your favorite kind of cookie?

Also, if you feel like contributing a ginger biscuit recipe, please do! I’ll do a biscuit recipe round-up on the website later this month, including the one contributed by Christine for her Pink Carnation Cookery series last year.

One winner will be chosen at random to receive a vintage 2004 advance review copy of The Masque of the Black Tulip, plus copies of The Deception of the Emerald Ring, The Seduction of the Crimson Rose, The Temptation of the Night Jasmine, and The Betrayal of the Blood Lily.

I’ll also be running this same contest on my author Facebook page for an identical pile of books– so feel free to double your chances by entering both places!

My mom’s molasses cookies – you melt the butter first so they’re chewy and delicious, not cakey like normal molasses cookies!

It is really hard to beat a warm, soft tollhouse cookie straight from the oven. I have a gingerbread cookie recipe but it is a hush-hush family secret. Congratulations on the 10th anniversary.

Absolutely have to go with a tried and true, classic cookie: oatmeal raisin! It’s a comfort cookie and the smell they emulate through the house while baking is awesome. A cup of Lady Grey tea to pair with them and you have heaven!

  34. Kerry Tastinger on February 3, 2016 at 6:32 pm

By far, and unfortunately for me, my favorite cookie is the limitedly (is that a word?) available Girl Scout Thin Mint. I get about 10 boxes of them every year and always seem to run out just before Christmas when I want them the most! And none of the wannabe ones will do in their absence! Thin Mints invoke memories of me sneaking into my grandfather’s nightstand drawer and stealing his Andes Candies when I was a child! I realized when I was older he probably specially stocked this drawer for the grandkids…. 🙂 Hen and her friends are such a fun group – I love Lottie and have a big soft spot for Penelope, especially 🙂

Toffee Bar Cookies!~ From the Maida Heatter chocolate dessert cookbook~ Fast, easy, with dark chocolate 60 % chips and lots of extra walnuts, or even other kinds of nuts~!
ere is Maida’s recipe for Dolly’s Crisp Toffee Bars, which combines ALL ingredients for an easy to make bar cookie. I have added more nuts, and often use all or much of the flour as whole wheat pastry flour. It can be tricky to spread in the jelly roll pan. If you have trouble, sprinkle a bit more white flour on top, as you spread the dough out evenly to the edges of the pan. I often leave out the vanilla, and have tried replacing it with water. Sometimes I just want the butterscotch-ey flavor, with no vanilla overtone. I tend to use Ghirardelli’s 60 % chocolate chips.
    Preheat oven to 350.
Cream together~ 2 sticks softened butter (salted is alright here if you prefer)
    1/2 cup brown sugar.
When light and fluffy, add 1 t. vanilla or water
    Quickly add ~
    2 cups flour
    1-2 cups chopped walnuts
    1 cup chocolate chips/morsels

The dough will be stiff. Place clumps of it around the unbuttered 10.5 x 15.5 x 1 inch jelly roll pan. With floured fingertips spread it out to make thin even layer.
Bake for 25 minutes, reversing pan in the middle.
I like to cook this until a nice golden brown. But it can be easy to overcook them too. So be careful near the end.
Cool for just a minute, in pan. Then cut into bar, any size you like!

My favorite cookie changes with my whims, but I do have a sentimental fondness for lebkuchen. When it was time to move back to the States a family friend gave me a box before we left Germany.
Here is the ginger biscuit recipe I used for the Peep & Biscuits pinkorama I help make in 2013.
    4 Tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter
    1 cup self-rising flour
    3/4 cup brown sugar
    1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon – 1 Tablespoon ground ginger (depends on one’s ginger preference)
1 teaspoon – 1 Tablespoon golden syrup or molasses (for me it depends on what I have on hand or flavor or sweetness I am in the mood for)
    1 egg
    1. Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees F.
    2. Mix all but the egg together.
    3. Mix in the egg.
    4. Scoop out with a cookie scoop or a rounded Tablesppon onto a cookie sheet covered with parchment paper. (If making for a pinkorama then roll out pea sized amounts.)
    5. Bake for 15 minutes.

  130. Sarah on February 4, 2016 at 4:42 am

No-bake chocolate oatmeal cookies! So very yummy! (Also, just about any cookie without cinnamon – since I’m deathly allergic to all things cinnamon. . . like Christmas. 🙁 )

“When you have a perfect cookie, why would you change it up?” Quote from my 22 year old son when I suggested that we abandon a family Christmas cookie favorite – YUMMIES – for a healthier alternative. My bad, clearly some thing’s are just meant to go together, forever. Holding up tradition, I voted for our family favorite, Yummies, a peanut butter, Special K bar with chocolate butterscotch topping. Yum…mies.

I made Chocolate chip Rye Cookies last week (I got the recipe from the Wall Street Journal – you use cake flour and rye flour and add ground caraway), and they’re my new favorite! Really delicious and a hit with my house.

The classic oatmeal raisin cookie. Or shortbread cookies. Why is it called shortBREAD if it is actually a cookie? Whoa. Deep thoughts in the cookie department.

My favorite cookie is Molasses sprinkled with powdered sugar. They always remind me that a mess of ingredients alone are alright, but together, they are magic.
