Cast That Book!
Given that the topic of who should play whom is one that frequently arises, it seemed time to add a new toy– er, diversion– to the Diversions page. Thanks to the fabulous people at Storycasting, one can now not only cast one’s favorite books, but pull up pictures of the actors, compare your cast lists to those of others, and exchange notes on your choices.
I’m very much looking forward to playing Cast That Book with The Temptation of the Night Jasmine in December and The Betrayal of the Blood Lily in January.
To start off the fun, who would you cast for The Secret History of the Pink Carnation? (My picks are up on Storycasting.)
The only one I’ve ever actually pictured someone real as I read the books was Colin. I always think of James Scott from Days of Our Lives as Colin. He’s tall, gorgeous and British (that’s just a bonus). Though his character is usual ‘evil’ on Days, he definitely has the mysterious thing going on like Colin does. He can certainly be charming and sweet. He’d be my perfect Colin.
Well, I always sort of pictured Miss Gwen as Maggie Smith. And while she’s a Night Jasmine character, I always saw the Dowager as Judi Dench. And I tend to think of MIles as a rather Hugh Grant-ish character π

And Geoffrey Rush is Stiles!
Sorry it double posted! I tried to add the last line and it posted twice …whoops!
I’ve always been a fan of Henry Cavill as Richard! He most definitely has the whole being rakish-thing down pat (I mean, have you seen “The Tudors”?).
See, what we need is a storycasting.com with little known (to people other than me) British actors, cause I have totally populated the books as if they’re being filmed for the BBC or ITV, so of course when I try to look up Raymond Coulthard, who would be the PERFECT Colin, it’s a no go π
So, I must link to Raymond…http://www.comedy.org.uk/images/library/people/180×200/h/hotel_babylon_james.jpg
I have a few ideas, some of them, though, are a bit too old now…
but if we could time travel, Colin has to be Colin Firth. That image just doesn’t go away.
Unfortunately for accuracy, my vision of Richard is way American looking/less Regency era fop. Closest UK vision I can come up with is Sean Connery. I just envision broad shoulders.
Jane is easy: Emily Blunt. I love her.
I also think Julie Andrews/James Garner combo as the parent Selwicks would be awesome. If you want to travel to their youth, they’d be perfect as Henrietta and Miles, too.
Having a hard time with Amy…she’s just so dang short. A young Audrey Hepburn keeps popping into my head or Hayley Mills.
I think Geoffrey Rush as Fouche would be great and Kevin Spacey as Napolean.
Told you my ideas were wild.
I always thought that Ewan McGregor would be oddly fitting for Miles. Something about his eyes being very boyish…
Honestly, after her performances in Harry Potter, I would love to see Maggie Smith as Mama Selwick, think of the image!
Lauren, I already sent you my list of dream actors, but for the rest of you all, heres my cast (pretty much none of whom are on storycast sadly) Eloise Kelly – Rachael McAdams
Colin Selwick – Oliver Chris
Amy Balcourt – Felicity Jones
Richard Selwick – Jonas Armstrong
Henrietta Selwick – Michelle Ryan
Miles Dorrington – Henry Cavill
Letty Alsworthy – Rachel Hurd-Wood
Geoff Pinchingdale-Snipe – Hugh Dancy
Mary Alsworth – Natalie Dormer
Lord Vaughn – Rupert Friend
Charlotte Lansdown – Kimberly Nixon
Penelope Deverau – Emily Browning
Miss Gwen – Eileen Atkins
Jane Wooliston – Carey Mulligan
The Marquise de Montval – Eva Green
Lady Uppington – Helen Mirren
Robert Dovedale – Noah Huntley
Tommy Fullien – Rupert Evans
Lord Uppington – David Rintoul
Angel B, I love the image of Kevin Spacey as Napoleon! Too funny.
Catherine, why did I never think of Eileen Atkins as Miss Gwen? That’s brilliant!
Catherine you and I are totally in agreement, on my list I also have Felicity Jones as Amy! Also how did you also think of Natalie Dormer, we must have a linked brain or something! Though I have Carey Mulligan as Charlotte π Jonas Armstrong has got fat and bald, so he wouldn’t work, anyone see season 3 of Robin Hood yet?
Anyway, he’s my full list, characters not yet mentioned means my brain has yet to cast π
Colin Selwick (Raymond Coulthard)
Richard Selwick (Joseph Kennedy)
Amy Balcourt (Felicity Jones)
Miss Gwen (Maggie OΓ’β¬β’Neill)
Mrs. Selwick (Geraldine James)
AmyΓ’β¬β’s Brother (Jeremy Swift)
Lord Vaughn (James Purefoy)
The Marquise de Montval (Frances Barber)
Henrietta (Perdita Weeks)
Geoff (Jamie Bamber)
Letty (Bryce Dallas Howard)
Mary (Natalie Dormer)
Charlotte (Carey Mulligan)
Robert Duke of Covedale (Stephen Campbell Moore)
Tommy (Jamie Sives)
Medmenham (Ed Westwick)
Penelope (Anna Madeley)
Alex (Aiden Turner)
Freddy (Rupert Penry Jones)
Elizabeth, I also pictured James Purefoy as Lord Vaughn! I think he’d be great in that role, should it ever come to that. And Felicity Jones is a wonderful choice for Amy, too!
Richard Armitage as Vaughn!
Now Armitage as Vaughn is brilliant!
Lord Vaughn is quite a bit older than the others, right? What about Gerald Butler?
i always pictured Cary Elwes as Richard. you know, the way he was in The Princess Bride. and i kinda thought of a younger alan rickman as vaughn. eva green would make a great marquise. and i have hugh dancy as geoff. i also want to cast john cleese but i can’t decide where to put him! haven’t really got the rest fleshed out yet. . .

Laura I agree with you entirely on Richard, that’s how I always pictured him, though now he’s all bloated and fat…hence my casting of Joseph Kennedy he looks JUST LIKE Carey Elwes, I actually had to do a double take, and great actor too, he was on Robin Hood.
yea, i was totally bummed when i saw how big he had gotten. i was like “cary! noooo! you used to be so hot!” o, and although i said alan rickman, i MEANT jason issacs. i got confused cause they’re both in harry potter. but jason issacs (in hp) even kind of looks like vaughn with the long hair and the cane. . .anyway, i still love alan rickman, and i would cast him as someone too. don’t know who.
~lAUra
It’s like Val Kilmer…what happened there?
lol. EXACTLY! o val, you used to be SO nice to look at. LOVED him in Tombstone.
here’s jason issacs:

i mean, does anyone else see that? YEA! π
~lAUra
I do see he could work, but I love me some James Purefoy.
I couldn’t think of Richard or Henrietta π
Eloise: I completely agree with you, AngelB, Emily Blunt is perfect!
Colin: Hugh Dancy
Richard: ?
Amy: Talulah Riley
Miles: Ewan McGregor
Henrietta: ?
Geoff: James McAvoy
Letty: Deborah Ann Woll
Mary: Keira Knightley
Vaughn: Richard Armitage!
Robert: Jonas Armstrong
Charlotte: Mia Wasikowska
I’m really enjoying looking at everyone’s cast list (and I had lots of fun on that StoryCaster site too) and I simply just adore these books. I’m in love with Richard Armitage as any of the male leads, but I’ve pictured him more as Geoff than Vaughn (Christian Bale is Vaughn in my head, haha!). And Natalie Dormer for Mary Alsworthy is absolutely perfect!
i keep thinking of jason lewis as richard! π
