If You Like….

I’m one book into the Ice and Fire series and thoroughly hooked. So….

If you like Game of Thrones, you’ll probably also like:

The Curse of Chalion, by Lois McMaster Bujold;

The Hero and the Crown, by Robin McKinley;

Arrows of the Queen, by Mercedes Lackey;

Daughter of the Empire, by Raymond Feist and Janny Wurts;

A Bloody Field by Shrewsbury, by Edith Pargeter;

Here Be Dragons, by Sharon Kay Penman.

Any other thoughts? Movie and miniseries suggestions are welcome, too!

As always, one person will be chosen at random to receive a Mistletoe magnet calendar.

    The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon Kay Penman

    The beautyof Sharon Kay Penman’s historical novels is that they tend to be multi-part sagas like SOIAF, though not so many volumes, usually as trilogies. The Sunne in Spendor is a rare, stand-alone novel, with no “sequel” as it is about the end of the Yorks.

    There seems to be a lot of overlap between the fan bases of Song of Ice and Fire and Robin Hobb’s Realm of the Elderlings books, also. (Made up of the Farseer Trilogy, the Liveship Trilogy, the Tawny Man Trilogy, and the Rain Wilds Chronicles.)

    The Game of Thrones miniseries on HBO. 🙂

    I second the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson.

    I’ll also add the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.

    THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING by TH White (good for that blustering, English manner combined with Merlin’s nuttiness and the eventual downfall of Camelot)

    Also, if one has never read Lloyd Alexander’s Prydain Chronicles, definitely get to those starting with THE BOOK OF THREE.

    Patrick Rothfuss’ Kingkiller Chronicles. The Name of the Wind is the 1st, and The Wise Man’s Fear is the second, the final and 3rd has yet to have a release date.

    These are the only ones I’ve found that come close to living up to GRRM’s world building.

    I love the Song of Ice and Fire series!!!! I was so excited to get the 5th book last week. If you like that series you may enjoy the Wheel of time series by Robert Jordan

    Thanks for posting this, Lauren! I too have just come to the Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones series and am totally hooked. I was just thinking to myself that I would have to find a “if you like” list for Game of Thrones for when I’m done. Thanks for the suggestions.
    Off the top of my head, I would suggest the Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay. I’m not a huge fan of his other stuff, but I enjoyed this series.
    Also, Jacqueline Carey’s The Sundering series is pretty good.

    I haven’t read Martin’s SOIAF series yet and only know of his worldbuilding/stories from word of mouth, so take that into consideration when I recommend Wilbur Smith’s Egyptian series, especially The Sunbird.

    Kristen Britain’s Green Rider series.

    Dorothy Dunnett?

    FYI–The Sunne in Splendour, recommended by other readers, is my fave SKP book.

    I also want to second your reccie of Daughter of the Empire. I’ve read a lot of Feist (before giving up on him) and definitely think the DOE trilogy (written w/ Janny Wurts) is his best work.

    Love Monday’s “If You Like” segments. . . because I don’t have enough books to read while I await the next Pink Carnation installment! 🙂

    Kate Elliot’s Crown of Stars and/or Crossroads series.

    N.K. Jemsin’s _The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms_ and _The Broken Kingdom_.

    And a second to the Bujold work. But then, I would recommend Bujold to any person who likes Ms. Willig’s work and wants to look at SF or F. (Chalion for fantasy, the Vorkoverse books [starting with _Cordelia’s Honor_] for SF.)

    It’s so hard to narrow it down to just a few…but these are some that are pretty similar to Game of Thrones.

    The First Law trilogy and its sequels, starting with The Blade Itself – Joe Abercrombie
    The Gentleman Bastards series, starting with The Lies of Locke Lamora – Scott Lynch
    Havemercy – Jaida Jones
    The Company – K. J. Parker
    The Assassins of Tamurin – S. D. Tower
    The Black Company series, starting with The Black Company – Glen Cook
