Fiction! I would want to write one of those scandalous Gothic novels that had Catherine Morland from Northanger Abbey in a tizzy!
I would love journalism, because I am always very curious. But I think fiction would be easier than journalism in the Regency. I wouldn’t want to be considered “forward” or a bluestocking, although that is exactly what I would be.
I think I would write journalism or poetry. I was on my high school newspaper staff, and in recent years have found an inclination toward poetry. I am not talented enough to write fiction.

I have to agree with those choosing fiction. I think journalism would be incredibly difficult as a woman in this period but how much fun to write one of those scandalous, turgid Gothics!

I choose fiction. I could express whatever I wanted to say and give opinions that may not have been allowed for women during that time period. Especially if I got to do it under a fake name. My fake name would have been Lacy Lebeau. I got that off of a tea box. Lol.
Fiction, which I would pen while hiding out in my room at the top of my house on the windswept, heather-clad moors. Or I might scribble in my bedroom in the family house in Mayfair, with the drapes closed as I would pretend to have a sick headache, and in any case would not wish to be distracted by rejected suitors moping in the park across the street.

Initially, I was going to say fiction for sure. But after a moment’s thought, I might have been a regency Mary Wollstonecraft writing fiery things about women’s rights and other reform issues.

I would probably start out writing bad poetry, segue into fiction, and then write in snarky letters to newspapers ala Benjamin Franklin.

While in real life I have a degree in Journalism, as an imaginary Regency miss with a secret life as a writer, I would much rather be a fiction writer.
