Weekly Reading Round-Up
Happy Friday, all!
Those of you who follow me on Facebook and Instagram will have seen that there’s been Book News this week! For those who aren’t, I promise, I’ll pull together a proper post about it here soon.
When I haven’t been in the new book cave (which is similar to the writing cave but involves less writing and more muttering to myself and scribbling notes on bits of paper– and, in this case, a lot of fieldwork), I revisited an old favorite, Trisha Ashley’s The Winter’s Tale, which is tied with her Twelve Days of Christmas for my ultimate feel good winter comfort read: single mom Sophy inherits the familial ancestral home and finds herself fending off attempts to con her out of it while reconnecting with her roots, discovering the family secret, and putting the dusty old manor house back in order. It’s like Midsomer without the murders, but with an old manor house to set to rights and a very unobtrusive Elizabethan ghost.
After that, I moved on to Anna Pitoniak’s recent spy thriller, The Helsinki Affair, which harkens back to the Cold War days of Le Carre and Helen MacInnes, as a CIA agent finds herself enmeshed in a modern conspiracy with connections to her parents’ past.
What have you been reading this week?
I’ve been listening to the new Robert Galbraith, Running Graves. I only ever listen to the audiobooks because the narrator is soooo good! The book is about 35 hours long, so even with an hour long commute and several listening hours during the workday, I’m still only halfway done.
When I have print reading time, I’ve been reading the latest Cleo Coyle Coffeehouse Mystery*- another auto-read series 🙂
*SO MUCH COFFEE in the books, Lauren, and RECIPES in the back of each one!
I’ve been reading The Plague Court Murders by John Dickson Carr written under his “inventive” pseudonym Carter Dickson. It’s very Poe esque but also slightly plodding. I shall find out who the killer is probably tonight! Then I’m finally diving into A Haunting on the Hill by Elizabeth Hand to finish off Halloween/Fall reading before diving into Christmas/Kill All Your Relatives season.
