Weekly Reading Round-Up
Happy Friday, all– and happy October!
To try to make it feel more like October, I started this week with one of the books on my Halloween list: Carol Goodman’s The Bones of the Story, in which the alums of a writing program return to their upstate college and find themselves, snowbound, being murdered one by in the same manner as the ghost stories they wrote in college. This falls into the genre of I Know What You Did In College/ Locked House Mystery.
After that, I tried a ghost story author I’ve been meaning to read, and decided her books were not for me, but was annoyed enough with the whole thing that I had to revert to Lord Peter Wimsey to soothe myself. (Unnatural Death, this time, with a possibility of continuing on to Murder Must Advertise if I’m continuing to feel Wimsical.)
What have you been reading this week?
And does anyone have any good Simone St. James/Barbara Michaels-esque ghost stories to recommend? Witchy rom-coms along the lines of The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches would also be welcome….
Meg Cabot just released Enchanted to Meet You, a Witches of West Harbor /start of a new paranormal romance series. I picked it up, haven’t read it yet (but enjoy her other adult & YA works).
I too have gone for the Halloween/Fall reads. Finally getting around to reading Richard Matheson’s Hell House. I love the movie so we shall see about the book…
Quel coincidence! I finished The Bones of the Story a few days ago. I’ve read a few of hers over the years. I enjoy how Hudson Valley saturated the settings are.
On page 428 of Band of Sisters (large print) there is a reference to Mrs. DeWinter. But wasn’t Rebecca written like 20 years after 1917 period in your novel?
I loved the Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches! And I just finished the Victoria Goddard’s latest novella, The Game of Courts, after which I had to re-read Petty Treasons. I’m not in a ghost stories mood, so re-reading the Dorothy Dunnett’s Dolly mysteries, which remain fun for me. And a lot of Michael Innes mysteries have been re-issued, so I may dive into those.
