Weekly Reading Round-Up
‘Tis the season! (Or getting there.) I’m re-reading an old favorite, Trisha Ashley’s Twelve Days of Christmas, which combines several of my favorite things: a stranded house party, an old manor house, a quirky cast of characters, and a perky first person narrator. And food. Lots of descriptions of food. You might want to have a mince pie or two with you while you read this book.
While I’m in a small English village sort of mood, I’m also contemplating finally starting G.M. Malliet’s Max Tudor series, beginning with Wicked Autumn, featuring an MI5 agent turned vicar in the sort of English village that never is but ought to be. I’ve been assured it’s a bit like reading a Midsomer Murders
episode, but with more snark.
What have you been reading this week?
Rest You Merry by Charlotte MacLeod (a humorous and quirky murder in an academic setting.)
Possession by A.S. Byatt and A Fountain Filled with Blood by Julia Spencer-Fleming.
A Holiday by Gaslight by Mimi Matthews was charming and Christmassy; the fact that the hero was reminiscent of North & South’s John Thornton didn’t hurt, either 🙂
For something completely different, binge-watched The Last Kingdom series on Netflix and was intrigued enough to pick up the first book that the series is based on (same name) by Bernard Cornwell. Engrossing read; don’t know much about that time period of British history (late 9th century AD), but Cornwell’s depiction is equal parts brutal and fascinating.
I haven’t started any holiday reading yet, just finished a Daphne du Maurier bio, The Rebecca Notebooks, which made me remember not to read her non-fiction. Then I was surprised by how much I liked my book club selection of John Scalzi’s The Collapsing Empire, it was truly fun space opera. Now I’m not sure what I’ll pick up next…
Getting to Yes! about the art of negotiating. For school. I’m ready to read something fun!
Bunch of holiday reading to do beginning with The Adults by Caroline Hulse. I read Twelve Days of Christmas last year-if we could all have all that Christmas cooking!!
I’m reading A Distant Tomorrow by Bertrice Small, the second in her sci-fi/fantasy series. Also, I’m reading Tolkien’s The Two Towers which makes me feel so cozy.
