Weekly Reading Round-Up

I’ve been on a mystery kick this week. I started with Carol Goodman’s The Seduction of Water, in which a writing professor goes back to the Catskills hotel where she grew up to solve the mystery of her mother’s death decades before, and then moved on to the first of Francine Matthews’s Merry Folger mysteries, Death in the Off-Season, in which the Nantucket police chief’s detective daughter must prove herself as a detective by solving the murder of the black sheep brother of a prominent local family.

I’d go right into the second Merry Folger mystery, Death in Rough Water, but I’m trying to pace myself and make the series last, so, instead, I’m switching genres entirely and moving on to Amy Poeppel’s satire of the New York private school process, Small Admissions.

    Cat Among the Pigeons by Agatha Christie was the big find for me this week–classic Christie, Poirot is the detective, setting is a highly reputable girls boarding school for the well to do–seriously, how did I miss one? One of her best. Saw Beatriz Williams at local bookstore last night and picked up Cocoa Beach, so that will be next!

    Merry Folger thanks you for the shout-out, Lauren.
    I’m on the Edgars committee for Best Novel, so I’ve been deep-diving among mysteries myself for the past several months. Picked up the new Dennis Lehane yesterday and COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. It’s called SINCE WE FELL, offers a female protagonist, and it is absolutely compulsive.

    The People we Hate at the Wedding. Enjoying the book but finding almost all the characters to be pretty unlikeable.

    Rereading Sarah Graves home repair mysteries for fun and Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache mysteries. If you haven’t read Louise Penny, you’re missing out.

    This week, for me, has been The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry – very intriguing 1893 English setting – I’ve really liked it so far – it seems to have all the best parts of Victorian novels and then some!

      You should try the mysteries by Ariana Franklin. They take place in Medieval England, and they are incredible with a fierce heroine/doctor.

    Just finished The Distant Hours by Kate Morton – very, very good. And since I’m on a Kate Morton roll, I started The Secret Keeper. Her books are the best!

    The school year is coming up. I am an English teacher, so I recently just re-read A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I am now re-reading Twelfth Night. I absolutely adore Shakespeare 🙂
