Cover Contest: Round II
Thanks so much to everyone for your lovely and lively compositions for the cover of The Orchid Affair. I will confess, I was absolutely staggered by the volume and variety of the entries. If asked to predict, I would have guessed that there would be around ten entries. Instead, at last count, there were seventy-two. Yup. That’s 72.
So here are the rules for Round II. I’ve posted the entries below in the order in which I received them (with the exception of the PDFs, but more about that in a moment). Each has a number at the lower left hand corner.
You can vote for your favorites by posting your top three by number, in descending order of preference, in the Comments section below, i.e. #1: 52, #2: 31, #3: 70. Makes sense? I’ll tally the votes and the top three will receive advance copies of The Orchid Affair.
Voting will remain open until Tuesday, August 10th.
Now, about those PDFs…. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get my website program to post the PDFs. PDF entrants, if you can convert yours to JPEGs, I can add them to this list. If not, if I can figure out how to post them, I’ll have a second mini-contest for the PDF entries. Sorry about that!
Also, if you sent me an entry and don’t see it here, just drop me an email and let me know.
Now… let the voting begin! Happy viewing!

Ooooh, there are so many to choose from! It’s too early in the morning for me to decide now; I’ll vote tomorrow 🙂
Btw, for those who are interested, a petition requesting a cover more in keeping with tradition can be signed here: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/petition/865/428/694
I think #5 and #32 ‘fit’ with the other books the best, but I just really love #52!!
My personal favorites are #42, #5, and #22
Ok, since it’s totally wrong to vote for your own 😛 (But then Anna did that for me! Yeah one vote!) So here are my favs: #1:8 #2:41 #3:40. Good luck to everyone, so many great entries!
they’re all so good!
photoshop is amahhhzing
but my votes have to go to #1:61 #2:27 #3:1 😀
I’m seriously impressed by the talent on display here. I couldn’t quite narrow it down to three favourite covers, so I have two covers tied for 3rd place 🙂
First – Number 32
Second – Number 26
Third – Number 24 and 5
a lot to choose from, but i have to say #61 is the best one
13,8,& 27
This was a really fun contest!
woww to all of them,
but my votes would be #1:61, #2:5 and #3:27 🙂
Wow, tough choices! Beautiful covers!
64, 21, 8
22, 21 & 1
But they’re all fantastic. 😀 It was a hard choice to make!
Its so hard to pick. but since i have to, i am gonna go with

This was a really tough decision. I am impressed with everyone’s entry (especially since I have no knack for photoshop myself!) but I have to say my favorites are #3-10, #2-41, and #1-16. Good luck to everyone who entered!!

My favorites are:
#8
#13
#27
My top favorites are:
1-#63 even though it’s only an arm it still said to me that this belonged to this series
2-#25
3-#21
I also really liked #13 and #41.
I don’t care too much for #61, she’s too young, she looks like she’s about 12 but dressed to look older. It looks like it’s the same girl as #46 only in reverse.
Great covers everyone!!!
My top 3:
1. #26
2. #32
3. #52
That is a hard decision! I like 64, then 26 and 18, even though 18 goes a completely different direction than the other covers.
#5 (This one is AWESOME!)

My vote is for #5 followed VERY closely by #23!!
Thank you to all the readers who submitted entries. These were all lovely and I had a great time seeing them. Ms Willig’s readers have great taste!
1st: 28
2nd: 32
3rd: 58
First of all, thanks to Kayla for the link to the petition. I signed it.
There were so many lovely paintings to pick from, but I tried to pick based on which ones most resembled the previous books.
My favorites were #5 and #42. And then I couldn’t decide b/w #s 17,25,26
5, 18, 56
#1) 27
#2) 1
#3) 10
I really liked 27 and 1 the best, as the women in them looked like governesses, as the main character in The Orchid Affair is supposed to be. And 27 is different from the rest of the series, but I think it looks more mysterious than romantic. As for 10, I thought it looked more like it had been done by a French artist than the others, which appeals to the fact that the governess in the story is working in France.
To answer Sarah S’s question, No, the Orchid Affair already has an official cover from the publishers that Lauren posted on 7/12 (https://laurenwillig.com/news/2010/07/12/orchid-affair-has-a-cover/)

I love #5!! That was really hard, since there are so many beautiful covers.
1. 27
2. 60
3. 21
They all are gorgeous!
#1: 8 (I love the atmosphere and tone of this one–it’s less romance than mystery/gothic, but it makes me want to read the book more than any other cover)
#2: 1 (I really like the rich colours and I think this one is the best match with all the previous covers, in being stylistically similar but giving a distinct sense of how the content and heroine of this novel are unique)
#3: 27 (I like the effect of the frames and the way the heroine appears to be gazing outside of the portrait warily. Also, the typeface has a James Bond, thriller type feel to it that gives the cover a very ominous impression. A very intriguing cover, that makes me think of Browning’s “My Last Duchess,” with the tensions underlying what appears to simply be a portrait.)
Great job on all of the covers!

18, 57, 32
#1: 42 – those EYES! Put that up on any bookstore shelf, with the cover facing the customer, and you’d sell a TON I’d say!!!
#2: 5 – classy/classic and colourful
#3: tie between 32 and 60 – both very intriguing!!
1: #25

Wow, is an understatement on these beautiful covers. Very difficult to choose among them at all. Here are my choices:
No. 1 – 8
No. 2 – 16
No. 3 – 13
Honorable mentions: 1, 2, 37

honorable mentions 8 and 18 but they don’t look enough like the other covers to fit in.
i also tried to avoid covers that have been done, dark pink, red, blue, green.
covers i voted for Silver, teal, and a much lighter green blue would work great and not redundant in the covers.

I’d have to say #1, with 16 and 5 tied for second. I like the painting on 16 best of the lot, but prefer the parchment-and-wax-seal look that matches so well with the rest of the series.

doubt no matter how much we all like it Lauren could use it as a dust jacket.
9 is obviously the only choice here. It’s easily the best because after all it is 9 and stuff. The only way I can quantify the greatness of 9 is by saying it is the only cover officially approved by the great Tafflesberg the undisputed leader in book cover coolocity judging. So yeah it’s 9. Goooooo 9!

Hmmm, tough decisions! I tended to go with ones that match the covers of the rest of the series, and also those that included flowers.
#12
This one just caught my eye, and I think it’s the best executed as well – it looks really professional and the picture is lovely.
#41
Not sure why this person changed the title on their covers but I like the look and style of this one.

I like that this one has a more governess-ish feel.

after the last few votes i think we have people with voting multiple times under different names or having friends vote. That is find but it looks to me like they are stacking votes. maybe we need a recount. I had friends vote, yes. They heard about the contest. but how often does the same three numbers in same order appear 8 times in the last 22 votes. i cant say its hard to keep those out but still. stacking is wrong. it keeps those from winning who should win. who won by talent.

I’m a little sad that 15 didn’t get very many votes so far. I look at that cover and I think – grey for Miss Grey. And then I look at that face and think that here is someone who is professionally meek, but who went to spy-school and then jumped strait into spy-dom … feet first into the deep end.

There wasn’t really one that jumped out at me as an overall favorite. I kept wishing I could take elements from various ones to make my own cover. That being said, the one that I preferred was 58. After that it would be 55 and 20.
My choices are 8 and 55.
I like 16, 37, 40
My top 3 in order:
#5
#1
#43
They are all beautiful in their own ways, but I particularly like #3 and #41.
Wow – I can’t believe how many beautiful covers there are! My personal favors are #26,#25, and #1.
1: 52
I feel out of all the above posted cover portrayals 52 fittingly exudes the tone an emotion of an affair compared to most others.
2: 21
Probably the most fitting when it comes to following previous books artistic themes. Very strong amounts of red.
3: 18
Personally I do enjoy the image of this cover greatly, hands down would be my favorite if the text had a border behind it.
30 and 35 were very similar – here are my choices in order:
30/35 is #1
32 is #2 and
64 is #3
( I love 58 but it doesn’t seem to flow with the other covers.)
I really like:
1. #42
2. #60
3. #16
These are all sooo beautiful. (And correct me if I’m wrong, but #42 is also the portrait used in the cover of a “Dear, America” book: “When Will This Cruel War be Over?”, I believe…)

Hi, all! It seemed like a good time to play Queen of the Site and pop in with a few ground rules for voting.
Okay: inviting your friends to view the covers and vote, as long as you make it clear that they should exercise their own judgment in choosing and not blindly vote a straight ticket. (Into which this current instance falls.)
Not okay: logging in under multiple names to vote for yourself. (Thank goodness, we have no signs of anyone doing that!)
If anything else comes up, feel free to email me!
These are my favorites:
1: 57
2: 42
3: 5
Everyone did a wonderful job! Can’t wait to see who wins!
O my goodness! Soo Many!
Everyone did such a great job!
1. 5 – beautiful
2. 52- agree with Bryan, its an affair!
3. 57- love how this brings up the fence from the chapter sneak peak! The way they seem to shy away from each other!!
I think if the 16, 37, 40 person gets in the top three they should be removed. most of their votes were stacked. She actually would be tied for third currently if not for one getting confused and voting in the wrong spot because they have never been to the site before LOL.
I love #5 and #18 is very pretty, though it does not match the series at all!
#1 5.
#2 42.
#3 18.
They are all lovely in their own way, however, these are my favorites:
#1 – 32
#2 – 23
#3 – 18

Second – 24
Third – 64

2- #20
3- #42
It was so hard to only pick three – great job everyone!
Beautiful~~~
16…37…40
Ok – tough to vote because they are all gorgeous.
But:
#1 – Cover 26
#2 – Cover 15 (which is almost identical to Cover 12 except 15 has a border I like – but both creators should get a prize if either one is picked)
and #3 – 59
Honourable mention would be #52 – excellent cover but almost too ominous but excellent!!
When looking at the covers I also considered which one(s) would grab my attention in a bookstore and make me pick up the book for a second closer look.
Andrea
They all look beautiful… My top 3:
# 52
# 54
# 57
21, 7, 59
#5, 18, 60 …tough choice though.
I had a very difficult time narrowing it down to just three covers. After much debate and reordering of the numbers, here is my selection:
#1 = 23
#2 = 42
#3 = 30
#5 definitely looks like that IS the cover!!!!
#1
#16
#5!
They are all lovely! And while some say to keep the covers similar, since each book can stand on its own (except they are addictive – ;you can’t read just one!’) I think the covers can all be different too. My favorite is #18,
I don’t think it’s really fair to be upset with someone for asking their friends to vote. We all know (or should know) that this is very common in the social media age. I’ve had friends email or Facebook me to ask me to vote for their babies in cute baby contests, their recipes in recipe contests, and themselves to be contestants on Big Brother. I don’t see anything unfair or unequal about this because everyone has the same opportunity to ask their friends to vote.
If you wanted a contest to be judged on pure talent, you’d have an independent panel of graphic designers come in and decide whose cover is the best. That’s not the way this contest was set up. That being said, even if it were, I think Ms. 16 37 40 would still be quite a contender. I love those broody eyes of Number 16! You can tell there’s something brewing under there…
Just my two cents. 🙂
I like 5, 32 and 66
Lisa, i would put more credence in what you say if you were not one of the people she told to vote for her. Yes you can tell people to vote. But telling people to vote for just you is very wrong in this kind of contest. I appreciate you are defending your friend but stacking votes i still very wrong. ..
On a good note you did admit she asked you to vote for her.. thanks makes things easier.
So many incredible covers – if Penguin needs some more talented designers, they needn’t look too far!
I couldn’t choose just 3, so I decided to choose my top three traditional picks (covers that resemble Lauren’s earlier books) and my top 3 new directions.
Traditional
#1: 21
#2: 5
#3: 60
New Directions
#1: 27
#2: 40
#3: 8
I’ll write the ones I like here so I can remember and then narrow it hopefully to the 3 favorite. I’m kind of looking for something like the other covers. I’m not familiar enough with the story but I thought that Lauren said the person wore mostly dark colors. I was looking for a different color than the ones we already have, tho’ one I really liked had similar colors so I had to take it off. I love #5 but a similar color dress to another, #9, #15 but kind of reminds me of a Jane Eyre, #16, #22, #32, #41, #42, #50. Okay let me see now: #1 choice is 16, #2 is 22, and #3 is 41. Thanks for the opportunity to see all the creativity.

Hello, this is “Mr. 16-37-40”.
To any contestants who are becoming anxious because of my wife’s excellent book covers & the incredible amount of votes they’ve earned, I would advise you to invest your time instead in telling all of YOUR friends to vote. This is a fair contest. I understand a good competitive spirit, but to repeatedly berate and besmirch a complete stranger because you don’t like the way they’re winning is doing yourself a disservice. There are no stacked votes here, only a well-broadcast contestant. Lauren herself posted a comment and told you there is no evidence of stacked votes, and yet still, you want her removed.
I voted for my wife’s covers not because “She told me to vote for hers” as she has been accused. The motivation behind my vote is that I think she deserves to win. I saw the effort and the hours she put into researching the story, the characters, the author, and the art style involved. She wasn’t just making something she thought would look pretty. She was designing something that she felt was right for the book. Then I saw how much effort she put into designing the cover. I saw the process behind all three of her covers, and I saw how much they meant to her.
God bless, and great job EVERYBODY!
Hi, all!
I just wanted to jump in to second what “Mr. 16-37-40″ said about the amazing job done by everyone.
Like him, I’d like to urge everyone to reach out to their friends and family so that the maximum number of people can enjoy the fruits of your creativity. The thought, effort, and talent that has gone into these covers is incredible. It’s truly awesome, in the original sense of the word.
If anyone has any concerns, questions, or comments about the voting process or your fellow contestants, I strongly urge you to email me about it off-list, so that we can avoid an echo effect and minimize hurt feelings all around.
Thanks so much to everyone for your time and your talent! I’ll be posting all of the covers in an album on Facebook and– if you’re all okay with it– I also want to make a permanent spot for them on the Diversions page, since they’re too pretty not to place here permanently. But more about that later….
Back to Pink IX!
Relax people-
as for Mr. above
I’m sure your wife put in many many hours, and they are beautiful covers.
And so did everyone else who contributed to the contest, so lets not forget those in the defensive post.
Now everyone has their own opinion- if people vote for numbers they’re told to and not by the contest directions- its on them.
That being said…

Wow, it looks like a lot of talented people out there. However there are also some covers that look very similar to other covers I have seen. Even after getting rid of those, it was very hard to choose.
Here’s what I decided on: 1, 3, and 64

#3-54
These are all so amazing! I had so much fun with this.
While debating whether or not it would be tacky to give one or two of my votes to myself, I was reminded by a friend of the end of Election (uh-oh spoilers!) when Paul votes for evil Tracy Flick instead of for himself and she then wins by one vote. So, in order to not ruin Matthew Broderick’s life (kidding), here goes:
#1: 66
#2: 1
#3: 16 (I absolutely love 32 but 16 looks more like the way I imagine Laura)
(And no, I did not vote a straight Me Me Me ticket.)
#1: 18
#2: 24
#3: 52
1. 56
2. 18
3. 42
All three are really too close to call. Please please please, no decapitated heroines!!!
I like 63.
But I also liked 5, 20, 41, 42…and a mess of others!
Wow taht’s a lot of votes. I have to admit that there were a lot of amazing covers. So my votes are:
No. 18 (Just freaking love it >.<!!!)
No. 40 (Give me a warm comfy adventure-awaits feeling)
No. 55 (Dunno, but it just feels right for Lauren. The backdrop could be in France or in England!!!)
Well there you go ^.^!!!

In keeping w/ an educated independant woman but also keeping close to time period & past covers these are my picks.
Congratulations to all those that showed their talent in their entries!
Wow, there’s a lot to choose from, but 41,42, & 60 seem to fit best with the rest of the series.
An impressive group. In choosing among them I was looking for something that would have a sense of mystery, that would indicate the period in which the novel was set, and would have strong but appropriate type treatment. My favorites are, in order: (1) 64; (2) 66; and (3) 23.
Congratulations to all.

Second: 40
Third: 26

After much dithering, I vote for 2, 8, and 28. I really can’t rank them! Just choosing only 3 was hard enough. I liked 14 almost well enough to rule out one of the three–it catches your opening so well!

#1~66 #2~ 55 #3~41 It is very hard to choose! I like those that kept with the wrap and sealing wax. I wanted an orchid somewhere, and I wanted something interesting , a bit mysterious to draw my curiosity. I did want her whole head. Some others were great, like 21, but I had trouble with the color, so very red, and her face… Thought provoking! Thanks for the contest!
My first choice is : 5, my second is : 17 and third is : 23
